Compassion Is Not A Feeling, It’s A Place You Go And Stay

June 23, 2020

When Covid-19 hit, the one place we all resorted going to, was a “place” of deep compassion. It’s a place we went to without even thinking about how much or little we wanted or how long we needed to stay.

Even for those of us who have a hard time finding compassion on a daily basis, we were forced to look inwards. And it felt natural – because psychologically we were overwhelmed, anxious, scared for ourselves, and scared for one another.

With the social injustice movement, we’ve each had to dig deeper to walk in the shoes of our black brothers and sisters in a way that we’ve never been forced to go there before. Today we’re staying in that place of compassion, and every day we’re walking new corridors and opening new doors.

How did we get “there”? One word: Empathy.

We’ve finally stopped, hit reset, and we’re now taking the time to develop our capacity to understand each other through our vastly similar and yet different skin colors and world views. We’ve gone “there” and we’re challenging moving mountains and activating real change in the hope of opening and nourishing each other’s minds, hearts and souls – all for a better world. So, let’s stay there!

So, what is empathy? Broken down into a trifecta of being, it’s shaped as the following:

  • Visionary Empathy: The ability to see a situation from a different perspective
  • Emotional Empathy: The ability to understand and share the feelings of another
  • Social Empathy: The ability to respond and act with compassion

Do you embody all three? Or which one comes more naturally to you?

When we go to a place of compassion and gift ourselves a chance to be more human, amazing outcomes surface. Movements of human change happen.
