Two Heads Are Better Than One, But Are Six Better Than Two?

March 9, 2022

“A committee is a group of people who individually can do nothing, but who, as a group, can meet and decide that nothing can be done.”

In a simple turn of phrase, comedian Fred Allen expressed how many people feel about group dynamics in business. You may be surprised, but we agree. But if that were all we thought, this would be a very short blog post.

It’s true we believe in the power of Group Coaching. But that’s because Group Coaching is built to avoid groupthink and help employees grow, individually and as a group. The key difference between traditional group dynamics and Group Coaching lies in the second word: Coaching. Our groups aren’t led by a chairperson, a manager or even a trainer. They’re shaped, guided,  and mediated by a third-party Coach.

HumanQ Group Coaching is designed to use the power of a group to shift mindsets and behaviors throughout a task-focused process. This process is different from any off-the-shelf training, or even one-to-one coaching. It teaches and grows a transformational mindset through self-reflection, collaboration and learning through others. In Group Coaching, it’s about growing, not just learning. And as it is with any successful coaching scenario, the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

What does that mean for the participants? Here are just a few of the benefits:

Driven by organizational goals

Group Coaching is always focused on achieving or shaping a goal for the organization. It takes the focus off of individuals, and the competitiveness along with it. Success is based on each individual contributing to the bigger whole.

Group members develop a deeper sense of empathy

Training focuses on the information alone, but Group Coaching uses the task as a way to improve how the group itself works.

A mindset of collaboration, not competition

When a group is coached to work together on a task, they’re working toward the same goals. You might think that’s a no-brainer, but often the default mindset is to protect personal and departmental interests above the greater good. Learning and practicing a true collaborative mindset builds a skill that stays with participants long after the Group Coaching is over.

By building mindsets and working toward shared company goals, Group Coaching is building leaders for the long term, whatever their role in the company. It combats groupthink and is adaptive to individual skill sets. Group Coaching is a fluid, adaptive approach that brings out more in every group. Without it, there’s a group of individuals. With it, there’s a team. And that team, despite common perceptions, can accomplish amazing things.
